grOw/cinema, Episode XVIII, now 85% complete!

I was able to finish up to frame 68 since my last update. (Sorry for the lapse; so many social media outlets, and so much work I forgot to update my blog.) The frames are all incredible detailed, and frame 68 alone has one of the highest character counts, and has a lot of overlapping, interacting, and varying (different skin tones, sizes, squishiness, scale, liquids, hair, expressions, etc.)

A few have asked about a Christmas release. This would be impossible, unfortunately (I had originally hope it would be released just before when I first started the issue.) I still have about 11 frames to go, the cover, review and proofreading, the website graphics and programming, etc., etc. Add on top of that the holidays, "real life" work, and my Patreon, there's still so much to do. I am hoping to release it within the first 10 days of January 2021.

In the meanwhile, here are 2 more previews that I should have posted on the last 2 Fridays...

Enjoy! And hang in there!

Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays!

grOw/cinema, Ep. XVIII frame 57 completed!

I got back on the cinema horse this week (see below), and pumped out another 13 frames since the last update. We are now at the 72% completion mark for this issue! Hang in there!

There was no update last week as it was a crazy and difficult week for me. Because of this, NO work was done on grOw/cinema last week. I had time to focus on my Patreon work due for end-of-month.

Early last week, we had to "say goodbye" to our beloved pet cat, who quickly was overcome by his condition (congestive heart failure) as recent procedures and medicines were having noticeably decreasing effects. Then, on the following day, I received word of one of my best friends was shockingly undergoing emergency heart surgery (turned into a 12 hour ordeal; a quadruple bypass). Then, of course, it was the Thanksgiving holiday here in the US on Thursday (which kind of continued into Friday).

grOw/cinema, Ep. XVIII, frame 44 completed.

It was a busy week — lots of work done on grOw/cinema (including rewrites, background creation and rendering, and finally, the actual artwork). Some delays caused less frames to be completed than I would have liked. It was so busy that I forgot to post this on this past Friday, as I usually do.

Frame 44 was completed on Friday, and I made great progress on frame 45. We are past the halfway mark now (56% complete)! We're past the hump.

Friday, November 6, 2020

grOw/cinema, Ep. XVIII, frame 37 completed!

It was a long week of "real life" work, "real life" issues (woke up with an excruciating stiff neck), and grOw/cinema art. I was only about to completed 5 more frames than last week.

With 37 frames done, we are now at the 47% mark!

Friday, October 30, 2020

grOw/cinema, Ep. XVIII, frame 31 completed!

* Edit: Headline was supposed to say "frame 31" and not "39".

It's been a crazy couple of weeks — work on grOw/cinema moving along, albeit slowly due to the huuuge amount of detail in these frames (many, many characters);  "real life" work getting in the way; other "real life" things getting in the way, etc.  So much so, that I forgot to post an update last few Fridays.  So, here are a couple of previews to mark the time.

We are now at the 39% mark — past the third-way point!

grOw/cinema, Episode XVIII, frame 15 completed!

I was able to finish 10 more frames this week, which is really good considering the multitude of slowdowns I encounters — real life work, computer issues, and the fact that many of the frames had a lot of characters (which takes more time).

With 15 frames done, we are now at the 19% completion mark!

grOw/cinema, Ep. XVIII, frame 5 completed!

The storyboarding has been completed and the first 5 frames of art are done! Work on the latest issue begins in earnest!

Friday, September 25, 2020

Work on grOw/cinema, Episode XVIII has begun!

The next episode on the on-going "Ever-Expanding Universe" series began not long after the release of issue 17. The initial script has been finished (it will be refined as I work on the issue); a few new backgrounds were created in my 3D program; and the first 16 frames have been storyboarded. If things go well next week, I should be able to complete the storyboards and begin the actual artwork!  This issue is shaping up to be a longer issue than the last few, coming in between 77-80 frames.

Since the last release, I also worked on a lot of Patreon art (see cropped previews). Join by Oct 13th to enter the Free Commission Contests (Color, Black and white, and Sketch) for the new month.

ALSO...
I've written a 2,000+ word outline of the next series. It still needs work, but this is the first time I've definitively put it down on paper. Some issues in the series have 3 or 4 sentences written describing the story; other issues have much more detail and rough dialogue written out. It may be between 7 and 9 issues. A title has not been decided on, yet.

grOw/cinema, Ep.XVII, frame 69 completed! Issue 97% done!

This issue is nearly done!  I just have a few more frames, the cover art, and the post production work (PDF and website work) to do!  Hang in there!  Release sometime late next week.

Saturday, August 22, 2020

grOw/cinema, Ep. XVII, frame 62 completed!

Whoops!  I've been working hard and late each week to catch up on the latestissue after some "real life" getting in the way. So on Fridays, I've had to jump from work to off-work stuff so fast, I forgot to post some updates...

As of yesterday (Aug 21), frame 62 of grOw/cinema, Ep.XVII has been completed!  That's hitting the 87% completion mark!

We're getting closer to the next release!  Stay tuned!

Friday, August 7, 2020

grOw/cinema, Ep.XVII frame 41 completed!

It's been a busy and "difficult" week (more on that later), but I was able to get 10 more frames done, plus halfway through an 11th.  The latest Episode is now 58% complete. The last few weeks have also been slow in the grOw/cinema production department, and I am hoping to get back on-track next week.

Hope you were able to attend SizeCon[micro]2020 and saw me on the Expansion and Relationship panels!

On a personal note, our "fur buddy" (9 year old tuxedo cat) had a difficult visit to the vet this week, having an ultrasound and diagnosis of congestive heart failure. It's not a good prognosis, nor does it offer long-term survivability. But he's taken well to medicines from the vet, and is comfortable, happy, and mostly his normal self for now. I can rest easy (for now) and concentrate on grOw.

grOw/cinema, Ep. XVII, frame 31 completed!

I just completed frame 31 of grOw/cinema, Ep. XVII.  I know that's not a lot of frames since my last post, but the last 2 weeks were a nightmare — crushing "real life" work with urgent deadlines and high difficulty, finalizing my July Patreon work due before month's end, as well as a slew of other things.

Here are a few previews of this month's Patreon art — Commissions, illustrations, and sketches.

Friday, July 17, 2020

grOw/cinema, Ep. XVII, frame 22 completed!

I just finished the 22nd frame in the latest issue of grOw/cinema, "The Ever-Expanding Universe." That is 9 frames this week, a number on the lower end of my usual. This is partially due to huge amount of details required for each of these frames, and partially due to delays due to having to concentrate on some "real life" work (and it isn't enjoyable work) that popped up suddenly. Enjoy the preview!

Friday, July 10, 2020

grOw/cinema, Ep. XVII, frame 13 completed!

I made pretty good progress this week, especially considering a number of hurdles that got in the way. Real life and real life work took up some unplanned time. I also worked on the mOnthly grOw illustration for my Patreon page (preview here). And the last number of frames have a lot of details in them, which takes a lot more time — more characters, character overlap, and, of course, muscles. I have now completed up to frame 13 and made it halfway through frame 14.

Friday, July 3, 2020

grOw/cinema, Ep. XVII, frame 5 completed!

In the last 2-1/2 days, I was able to complete 5 frames on the next Episode of grOw/cinema. (The first 2 days of the week was spent finalizing the script and the thumbnails, and I took a half day today for the upcoming US holiday weekend.)

Now, on to other musings: I have been asked a few times about how ling will grOw/cinema, "The Ever-Expanding Universe" will go on for, or when it will end.  My answer is that it's set up to go on for a long time (thus "Ever-Expanding" in the title). However, I also would say that I would go on to other projects from time to time, and come back to it.

(Sorry this is so long. If it takes 5 minutes to read, know it took almost 2 hours to write.)

With over 3-1/4 years of this first grOw/cinema series behind us, I am looking into this "break" to go on to a new project.

I always touted grOw/cinema: “The Ever-Expanding Universe” as the succulent dessert to the main course of previous grOw/cOmics and grOw/stOries. (Note that cinema is a style, not the concept. Future projects will probably be done the in the cinema style, but not have the serial-what-happens-next-issue on-going aspect, but, instead, a finite storyline.)

With a slow start in sales (probably due to it’s “new” and “unproven” idea), it soon became one of my most popular series. My readers and I couldn’t wait until the next release. (Tune in next week!)

grOw/cinema, series 1, was always meant to be like the old movie serials, when you “tuned in next week” to see what happened to our hero. I even used the scrolling text from the old Flash Gordon movies (and later done in Star Wars), to pay homage to this genre.

However, it dawned on me back in December 2019 that I was approaching the 3 year mark on this project, and DID start to contemplate working on something new. (Not the end “The Ever-Expanding Universe”, but to temporarily put it on hold.) I have had 3-5 basic storylines/concepts swirling in my head for a long time that all needed fleshing out. Coming up with basic concepts is easy. But the real work is in the details and the time it takes to build them up.

Creating the artwork takes time, thus the standard 2-4 months turnaround between issues. I can understand that, for many of you chomping at the bit for the next episode, this seems like a long time when waiting for the next project to come out, just like when we wait for the next movie in our favorite series to come out. On my end, it's nearly non-stop work, so it doesn't seem so long to me. So, my realization that it has been over 3 YEARS since cinema #1’s release truly shocked me.

In general, most of the storylines I choose to make into grOw/cOmics or grOw/cinema have been in my mind anywhere from 2 to 5+ YEARS!  I come back to them in my head from time to time, adding details and reworking ideas when I’m not doing anything taxing, such as long, boring car drives. grOw/cinema’s idea, for example, came to me with all the calls for a continuation of the “Wishful Thinking” comics. THAT was a long time ago — maybe even 8 years since I started envisioning something similar to “Wishful Thinking”, but not simply re-doing it. grOw/stOry 15, “Succubus” was a rewriting of an old E.L. Pub book that I had acquired. I originally started the process with one writer in mid-2008. The stOry was finally completed by a different writer and illustrated by me, and published in late 2013!  grOw/cOmic 6, “Milking the Plot” started as an idea on a who-done-it, plot twisting narrative in Late 2012. I began conceptualizing the storyline in August 2014, and the first issue came out Nov 2016.

That said, I HAVE now begun putting one of the afore-mentioned 3-5 ideas to (digital) written word over letting it swirl in my cranial gray matter. I hope I can make it solid enough to begin to work on it. But this will take a little time. The current project (Ep. 17) is well underway, and will be continued to be worked on until completion. Episode 18 may follow as I have envisioned it as a “season ender” episode, completing the initial arc of Carl exploring his new powers. (Originally, I was going to make it an even 20 episodes.) During the time working on 17 and 18, I will spend a little extra time each day writing the new idea (and allowing it to “gel” when I am not working on it). Should I make great progress, I MAY even begin work on this before Ep 18.

At least, these are the current plans. Life, grOw, and other aspects may change this.

Work on grOw/cinema, Ep. XVII has begun!

After the usual first week monitoring of sales after a new release, I decided to upgrade my MacOS a few steps since 1) I had some bugs that were causing slowdown issues and other problems for a while, and 2) I was unable to use the latest version of Adobe's products (Photoshop) since my OS was too old. I don't upgrade to each new OS due to software and/or hardware (Wacom tablet) issues. I usually stay a version or 2 behind, letting them iron out the kinks.

I've done this before, and knew it would easily take a day or two due to make sure all files are backed-up (do YOU have copies on separate drives of all your files?), having to install a new OS, having to reinstall all applications, fonts, settings, etc.etc.  HOWEVER, this time, it was one of the worst experiences I've had doing so, taking 5 days! Not to get into detail, but there was a lot of waiting (processes taking 5 hours), reinstalling, hard drive wiping, trying to merge 2 partitions into new sizes, backing up, etc.

Now that this chore was out of the way, I needed to test the new system. During this time, I created all my June Patreon artwork (cropped sneak peaks below). (patreon.com/bustartist)

While I worked on the Patreon images, I was letting the next storyline of grOw/cinema percolate in my brain. After hitting my stride working out the concept of the story beyond the main bullet points that I wanted to achieve, the script writing went quite smoothly.

Today, I started to rough out the thumbnail storyboard drawings, visually planning the whole issue. I got halfway through the issue. This I will continue early next week, and then begin the actual artwork.

grOw/cinema, Ep.XVI complete! Release by end of the week

I finished the final frame of grOw/cinema, Episode XVI today.  Now, I have to create the Cover image, as well as the post-production work, including proofreading and correction (text and art); creating final PDF; website graphics and html; ecommerce set-up.

Hang in there! It's coming soon!

Friday, May 29, 2020

grOw/cinema, Ep. XVI, now at the 97% mark!

Whoops! Seems I forgot to post an update last Friday.  So this is a double-update post.

As this workweek closes, I was able to complete up to 68 frames, and made it about 75% of the way through frame 69.  The issue is almost done!  I just have a few frames and the cover art to complete. Then, it is on to the post-production work such as proofreading, PDF making, website updating.

Release coming soon!

Friday, May 15, 2020

grOw/cinema, Ep. XVI now at the 84% mark!

I made very good progress this week, completing 11 frames (frame 59) and got halfway through the 12th one. All this work despite some technical issues (internet provider), personal errands, rewriting some of the script, and other delays. We're getting closer to the home stretch! Hang in there!

Friday, May 8, 2020

grOw/cinema, Ep. XVI, frame 48 completed

I was only able to get 8 frames done this week. Lots of other stuff took up time — Patreon art, computer issues, some moving-in delays, losing internet and subsequent calls to the cable company, etc. etc. But, with frame 48 done, we are now past the two-thirds milestone!

Friday, May 1, 2020

grOw/cinema, Ep. XVI, frame 40 completed!

Well, I'm moved in and my studio has been set-up! (House-wise, there is still a lot of boxes to unpack.) Work on grOw/cinema has been again, and I was able to finish up to frame 40. That means we are at the 56% mark — more than halfway! Whoohoo!

Friday, April 10, 2020

grOw/cinema, Ep. XVI, frame 26 completed

I made great progress this week, completing 14 new frames for Episode XVI, completing up to frame 26! This is fantastic, as I had at least one half-day that I need to focus on some pre-move preparations, made some extra Patreon content, and still was able to get this many frames done. The issue is now 37% done!

I will be doing as much as I can early next week, before shutting down (April 14th) for about a week while I move. I should be back up and running by about April 21-22. After 2 years renting in our new home state, we are finally moving into our permanent home next week.

Friday, April 3, 2020

grOw/cinema, Ep. XVI, frame 12 completed!

It was a good week for the production of the next Episode of grOw/cinema. I was able to build out the two 3D backgrounds needed for this issue in Shade3D on Monday and half of Tuesday. Then, from mid-Tuesday to Friday, I was able to create the first 12 frames of the issue.

Stay safe! Stay healthy! Full steam ahead!

I hope everyone is taking care and doing their best to stay healthy in the strange new world we find ourselves in. Me? It's nearly the same-ol'-same-ol' as I've worked exclusively from home for... oh... the past 12 years.

Next month, I am moving. (Wait? Didn't you just move 2 years ago, BA?!) Yes, I had. But that was into a rental while we became familiar with our new area/state and took the time to scout out the location of our final relocation. That relocation will take place sometime between April 13-20. I will probably be offline for a few days to a week, as I breakdown and re-set-up my studio in the new place.

But don't worry. I've already finished most of April's Patreon art.  Patreon has a wonderful "schedule" post feature (as most blog-like interfaces have) that I can schedule posts ahead of time, and have them go live even if I am not internet-connected.

As for grOw/cinema, Episode XVI, I have completed the initial script, and have nearly finished the storyboarding for the full issue (completed 68 of 70 panels as of today). Next week, I will begin the actual artwork (after some 3D model building to complete the new setting in which this issue will take place).
